Brian Eno’s LED Color Changing Turntable Spins an Ambient Mood
Musician and composer Brian Eno, renown for a legendary catalog of sparsely inhabited and evocative soundscapes that has defined and continues to shape an entire genre of ambient music, is now apparently a turntablist of sorts. While widely known for his aural compositions, lesser known is the artist’s inspired exploration of light as a medium realized in the form of LED-illuminated light boxes. A limited collection of LED-illuminated turntables created in collaboration with London’s Paul Stolper Gallery is Eno’s latest meditation of colorscapes.
With a limited edition run of 50, the turntable is obviously more art piece than audiophile component, with each unit engineered to house a duo of multi-color LED illumination within the turntable’s acrylic base and platter, spinning to produce a haunting diffused glow of energized color combinations.
Referencing the light sculptures of James Turrell and early 20th century abstract compositions of suprematism, the turntable is imagined to interpret music into a “tangible” light, swaths of illuminated hues “…as if caught in a cloud of vapor.”
“You have the idea that this small thing, which can’t contain that many instructions, produces this hugely complex interwoven, interdependent world,” explains Eno about the project, “One of the things I like about this piece of work is that it stands as proof of that.”
No pricing has been revealed for this limited run of 50 artist-signed turntables exclusively available through the Paul Stolper Gallery, hinting if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it.
